Blackheath: Climate Change Camp
London, August 2009: More than a thousand activists spent the whole week at climate camp in south-east London. Supporters travelled from across the UK to Blackheath, where the camp was set up on a hill overlooking Docklands and Canary Wharf. Organisers claimed that this year's venue symbolised the financial and corporate centres of power, and is within the floodplains of the River Thames, which they warn is at risk of bursting its banks if climate change continues to escalate. Blackheath was also the site of the first popular rebellion in English history - Wat Tyler's so-called Peasants' Revolt against unpopular taxes more than 700 years ago. News of the activists' arrival was met with mixed reactions among people living nearby. The Heath is overlooked by special tripods - constructions surrounding the camp with hundreds of makeshift shelters and tents. |
